Motorists are being recommended to take the time to shop around for competitive car breakdown insurance.

According to Tesco, motorists should concentrate not only on getting a policy which is low-priced but also one which provides the most adequate cover for their needs.

Head of insurance Allan Burns said: “Many motorists don’t realise that the car breakdown cover is a highly competitive market.”

Mr Burns added that drivers should look for insurance offering “the best combination of quality and cost”.

In addition to taking out an adequate travel insurance policy, motorists looking to take their vehicle abroad could also be well advised to opt for comprehensive motor cover.

Research conducted by Find.co.uk revaled that many car insurers include European breakdown as an ‘optional’ part of their policies, which may mean consumers have to pay out more to ensure they are covered should their vehicle suffer from a breakdown.

With sales of hybrid cars doubling in Britain this year, insurers are beginning to come up with competitively priced eco-friendly policies.

Research by moneysupermarket.com shows CIS eco-insurance, in particular, is doing its bit for the environment without stinging drivers.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at price comparison website moneysupermarket.com, said: “Many drivers are concerned about their impact on the environment and in an effort to ‘go green’ have been be tempted to opt for eco-friendly insurance.

“In March, I called on insurers to make green premiums more competitive or else concerned motorists could simply shop around for the cheapest deal that met their needs and give some of the money they saved to eco-friendly causes.

“Our research shows CIS has taken this on board with very competitive premiums now. It would be tremendous if ibuyeco and More Th> n followed suit.”

Motorists snubbing car insurance companies by going private
Most motorists choose to have their vehicle repair privately than to claim on their car insurance, it has been claimed.

According to a survey from Auto Trader, the reason over half of drivers have done this may be because they do not wish to invalidate their no-claims bonus, Motor Trader has reported.

Of those who have claimed, one fifth stated that they were not happy with the service they received from the insurance company.

And this made communications between customer and insurer stressful, 40 per cent responded, although Jonathan Williams, head of marketing at the firm, commented that drivers should not finance the repairs themselves.

“Motorists should not need to dip into their own pocket to fund repairs when an insurance claim could cover it. Insurance companies need to ensure the claims process is fast and efficient,” he said.

Meanwhile, Halifax Today has reported on a 22-year-old driver who was fined £100 for driving without car insurance.
